Library of Things Policy

LIBRARY OF THINGS COLLECTION & CIRCULATION POLICY

The Library of Things is a collection of non-traditional items that complement the Edwards River Public Library District’s (ERPLD) mission. Patrons who borrow a “Thing” agree to abide by the Library of Things lending guidelines below and will need to sign a Liability Waiver.

The Library of Things is not intended to be comprehensive, as the Library is limited by a finite amount of funds and storage space for these items. The Library of Things may include, but are not limited to: Passes, Puzzles, Games, Hotspots, Detectors, Tonieboxes, Tonies, etc.

A valid 18 years or older ERPLD library card holder with no outstanding fines who has been a card holder for 30 days or more is able to borrow a Thing.

Loan Periods and Fees – Provided according to availability.
Hotspots: 1 week checkout period, no renewals, $5/day overdue, limit 1 item
Passes: 1 week checkout period, no renewals, $5/day overdue, limit 2 items
Puzzles, Games: 3 week checkout period, 1 renewal
Detectors: 3 week checkout period, 1 renewal, $5/day overdue, limit 1 item
Tonieboxes: 3 week checkout period, no renewals, $5/day overdue, limit 1 item
Tonies: 3 week checkout period, no renewals, $5/day overdue, limit 5 items

The Library reserves the right to change borrowing periods for any Thing at any time. If any part of the thing is lost, stolen, or returned unusable, the user must pay the replacement cost of the item.

Technology – Any use of the device for illegal purposes, unauthorized copying of copyright-protected material in any format, or transmission of threatening, harassing, defamatory or obscene materials is strictly prohibited. The Library does not monitor and has no control over the information accessed through the Internet and cannot be held responsible for its content. The Internet and its resources may contain material that may be deemed controversial or inappropriate by certain users.

Hotspots must be kept in a temperature-controlled environment. Please do not leave in a vehicle or outside for an extended period of time as this can damage the device. Overcharging the battery can also cause damage to the device.

If a hotspot is overdue, the service will be cut off and the user’s library privileges will be suspended. Three (3) late returns for hotspot checkouts will result in being permanently banned from borrowing hotspot devices.

Proper Use and Liability - Please use care when handling the Thing you have borrowed. The borrower is solely responsible for the Thing and will be billed for reasonable repair or replacement costs associated with damage or loss of Things and/or peripherals due to neglect or abuse. The Library is not responsible for any injury, loss, or damage that may occur from use of a Thing. The responsibility to protect against loss is the borrowers. Staff will inspect Things upon return. Borrowers are expected to return the Thing with all parts and components in the original condition and in the original Library container to the Circulation Desk. Patrons will be financially responsible for any damage to a Thing while in their possession.
